The Venue

Villa di Capezzana

Via Capezzana, 100 59015, Carmignano Prato, Italy

Capezzana is a vineyard and estate that continues to play a significant role in Tuscany’s famous wine and olive oil production. The history of the estate stretches back to 804 AD, and at the heart of the estate is the 16th-century Medicean Villa. Our wedding will take place in the grounds of the Medici Villa, where we will drink the famous wines and taste the olive oil that the estate produces.

The Area

Capezzana is located in the unspoiled region of Carmignano, in the province of Prato, just 45 minutes west of Florence. Capezzana is perfectly placed in the secluded historic heart of the Tuscan countryside, offering amazing views of the landscape and Florence, away from the main tourist routes. Capezzana itself is not accessible by foot (and we do recommend renting a car), but is close to a number of charming small towns such as Carmignano, Artimino and Poggio a Caiano – all once favoured by the Medici family and Leonardo da Vinci. The larger cities of Prato (20 minutes drive), Pistoia (30 mins drive) and of course Florence (45 mins drive) are also nearby, which have a wider choice of hotels and facilities.

  • Carmignano – 10 mins drive
A lovely, quiet and traditional town closest to Capezzana. The town itself is a little sleepy but has two great restaurants, a bar and a beautiful church.
  • Artimino - 15 mins drive
The most beautiful hilltop village, with some of the best restaurants in the area and also home to a spectacular Medici Villa. Artimino also has a luxury hotel as a great option for a place to stay. It is more commercial than other nearby towns, but it still shouldn’t be missed.
  • Poggio a Caiano – 10 mins drive
A slightly larger local town, compared to Carmignano and home to the UNESCO protected Medici Villa and gardens that it is well worth a visit. You can also find several great cafes, restaurants and pizzerias
  • Prato – 15 mins drive
The closest city to Capezzana, Prato is the heart of the region and boasts a beautiful historic centre, including Prato’s impressive cathedral. The outskirts of the city house the warehouses known for the city’s textile industry, so we do recommend staying towards the centre for the best experience.
  • Pistoia – 20-minute drive
A lovely nearby city with lots of art and restaurants to see, without the flocks of tourists you get in Florence.
  • Florence – 45 mins drive
One of the world's most famous and beautiful cities, and home to Italy's Renaissance wonders. Although very touristy, the art and the restaurants are not to be missed – see Molly’s recommendations below.
  • Lucca - 1 hour drive
Beautiful city that we couldn't recommend highly enough.

Getting There

On the wedding day (Saturday 25th July), we will organise travel to and from the wedding venue for all guests staying in the nearby area. If you are located in a rural area further than a 40-minute drive, we may ask you to meet at a nearby large town or city.

For the rest of your holiday, we recommend renting a car as the best way to get around the area.

By Air

  • Florence Airport* (Amerigo Vespucci Airport) - 30 minute drive and offers BA flights from London City Airport
  • Pisa Airport (Galileo Galilei Airport) - 1 hour drive, and offers many EasyJet flights

*PN: Whilst Florence Airport is closer in proximity, Pisa often offers cheaper flights

Nearest Train Stations

  • Prato Station - 10-minute drive to Capezzana, 16-minute train journey from Florence
  • Florence Station (Firenze Santa Maria Novella ) - 44 mins by car

Accommodation

Our families will be staying at Capezzana, but there are a wide selection of nearby agriturismos, hotels and rental villas. We are currently reaching out to to try and secure some availability and will update the website accordingly. For rental villas we recommend checking Airbnb, Vrbo and Plum Guide.

Tenuta La Borriana - 15 mins drive

Luxury agriturismo and vineyard in Carmignano with 10 rooms and 6 self-catering apartments available. It has a huge panoramic pool and a lovely restaurant which serves all of its own wines.

Hotel Tenuta Di Artimino – 10 mins drive

Hotel Artimino (part of the Melia Group) is a large luxury hotel and vineyard set within the grounds of the Medici villa. Hotel Artimino is the largest hotel in the area, with a number of gorgeous rooms in the hotel as well as self-catered apartments in the Borgo village. The hotel itself has a huge pool, multiple restaurants and a spa, but also has the added benefit of being within walking distance of nearby independent restaurants. If you sign up to the Melia Collection point scheme, you get a welcome discount.

Agriturismo Sottotono - 15 mins drive

Beautiful agriturismo located in the Tuscan hills with a larger-than-life Italian owner. It has 8 lovely ensuite rooms, a pool and a restaurant. Please note the owner does love a party so the pool can get a little busy.

Restaurants

The traditional local cuisine usually consists of tagliere (a meat and cheese platter), followed by pasta, followed by a main and of course, the most incredible wines you could ever dream of. It can be a little difficult in the villages for veggies, but we found a good balance of restaurants that should work for all!

Artimino

  • Circolo Ricreativo MCL - famous fun and informal restaurant that serves charcuterie boards and pizzas in the evening with the best views of the region. Perfect for a big group meal, great atmosphere and the best sunsets. P.N pizzas only available in the evenings
  • Da Delfina - a high-end trattoria that Italians travel far and wide for. Make sure you book ahead!
  • Bottega Peruzzi - classic unfussy Italian - expect truffle pasta and a great atmosphere
  • Gelateria La Torre - tiny but mighty gelateria with opening times of 3pm - midnight
  • Hotel Artimino restaurants (La Cantina Del Redi, Biagio Pignatta) - part of the hotel group, so a little more expensive but still lovely

Carmignano

  • Su Pe I Canto - our favourite restaurant in the area that serves incredible wine and a beautiful variety of dishes that is sometimes find to hard in the region. Small and sophisticated, make sure to book ahead!
  • Trattoria Ristorante Il Barco Reale - simple and traditional and super cheap. We had a three-course meal with wine for under 50 euros
  • Spizzettando - best pizzeria for take-out
  • Tenuta La Borriana - Traditional, but sophisticated restaurant within the vineyard and agriturismo. All wines served are from the vineyard and are excellent!

Poggio a Caiano

  • Pasticceria Roberta - an excellent local cafe and pasticceria. Grab a quick standing sandwich or coffee at the counter or have a lovely sit-down lunch at the back
  • Lots more great restaurants to see in the town, but we have not tried them ourselves.

Florence

  • Il Santo Bevitore - best restaurant in Florence, and a 10/10 wine bar next to it. All the locals line the streets with a glass of wine till late
  • Osteria Santo Spirito - best pasta in Florence, and located in the lovely Santo Spirito Piazza, away from the crowds
  • All'antico vinaio - best panini, go after 2.30 if you want to skip the queue, as it gets crazy busy
  • O’munaciello - best pizza in Florence

The Sites

The region of Carmignano has huge historical importance as the favoured countryside escape for the Medici family in the 16th and 17th centuries. A great way to explore the area is by following the Medici trail and visiting all the Medici Villas

Carmignano

  • Poggio a Caiano Medici Villa - our favourite Medici villa with beautiful gardens to explore with free entry. Check museum opening times before you go and don’t forget to explore the gardens before it gets too hot.
  • Artimino Medici Villa - less impressive than Poggio a Caiano, but still worth a visit. You can ask the hotel reception to organise a guide for free
  • Quarrata Villa La Magia Medici Villa
  • Medici Villa of Cerreto Guidi
  • Via Medicea - Path of the Medici - https://www.viamedicea.it/en/path/ - a walking route to explore the area, but with a great list of notable sites to see along the route
  • The Visitation by Pontormo - the region’s most famous painting, located in the Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Carmignano

We will organise travel to and from the wedding on Saturday if you are in the region. Please do just let us know your address once you have booked accommodation. If you are staying further out (more than 45 minutes away) we will ask you to get to a closer pick-up point such as Prato.
